The Bobcats were in Houston last night to meet up with the number 11 Rice Owls.
In a tough early season test, the Cats were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Freshman Tyler Davenport was given his first career start and did he ever deliver, going 6 scoreless innings giving up just three hits.
The Cats were able to hold Rice in check until the bottom of the eighth, when the Owls came up with two big runs. After a scoreless ninth inning, the Bobcats found themselves going into extra innings for the second time in four games this season. The tenth inning went by without a run from either team.
In the 11th, Texas State was able to push one across to go ahead 3-2 going into the bottom of the eleventh. Rice was able to string together consecutive hits to score the game-tying and game-winning runs.
Although the loss hurts, this has to give the Bobcats confidence that they can hang with a top 15 team in the country.
The Cats will look to improve their 2-2 record at home this weekend, as they open up a three game set with UC Riverside on Friday.
